Module 1: Cluster detection and initial investigation

Module 1 acts as an introduction to outbreak investigations, and the partners involved. In this module, you will learn about how these outbreaks are identified, how the investigation is coordinated, and some of the tools utilized by investigators during the initial stages of the investigation.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this module, learners should be able to:

  • Describe how enteric illness outbreaks are identified using laboratory surveillance data,
  • Understand the role of whole genome sequencing in outbreak identification and its advantages,
  • Understand how a multi-jurisdictional outbreak investigation is coordinated in Canada, and
  • List key components of an epidemiologic summary.
